Sky Mowen

Biography

From my earliest memories I worked with my father, John Mowen, in his studio creating functional forms in leather. I was 14 years old when he began a transition into stone carving.

As he went through this change I would tinker with the tools and scrap pieces of stone. I remember making my first real finished piece when I was around 15 years old. On and off I made pieces and/or helped my father with some of his pieces, i.e. sanding and polishing.

Throughout the years he began to teach me the basics of the operation of the tools and I started to hone my skills to the point of being able to create pieces of work for his business. It was at this point that I began creating work of my own. My inspirations spur from my fathers work, seeing the awesome pieces he was creating. Always curiously wondering what that next stone will look like when it is finished. That’s one thing that really keeps me interested in this type of work. A stone might look just like a regular stone at first glance but when you begin to work it down then the natural beauty is released from within the stone. This mysterious exploration keeps me excited with what is to come from each and every piece I create.
