ERIC JENSEN
Artist Statement
Words on a page may convey more of a sense of certainty than
is appropriate...my statement should probably end in a question mark.
Work proceeds from one stage to another without ever really concluding or settling anything.
Pieces that are made represent points along the way.
I'd like to incorporate a little mystery or ambiguity, as an expression of the nature of the process.
Throughout the long history of vessel-making, pottery surfaces have been used to record elements of the life of the vessel-maker. This record becomes part of the context in which the next generation works. The "record vessels" are an attempt to join that tradition.
People and I admire or am influenced by include: Wallace Stegner, shaker furniture, Martin Puryear, water smoothed stones and wood.
